Shocking holds off Crime Scene, wins Melbourne Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -Shocking won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday to give trainer Mark Kavanagh his second victory in four days.

Shocking was three wide most of the 2-mile race before pulling away from the pack and holding off Crime Scene for the win. South Africa-trained Mourilyan came on late to finish third.

The $5 million Melbourne Cup is the biggest event on the Australian racing calendar and draws more than 100,000 people to Flemington race course and millions of viewers on TV.

Trainer Kavanagh said he worked Shocking specifically with the Cup in mind, saying he needed a run at the Lexus Stakes, which he won here Saturday.
